In older homes, it was common to alternate closets and fixed items like you plan on doing to create more floor space. In the newer homes, for some reason, there seems to be a lot of "wasted" space. I think it's a well thought plan to get the most use out of the space you have. Good luck...remodeling is a lot of work but the end result is very satisfying! I think it’s an excellent design.
